Our goal is to make this process easier for you, taking care of all the time-consuming admin stuff, like sales and deliveries, so you can just concentrate on the cooking!
The most important thing is that you make delicious home-cooked food. If you’re passionate about food and want to share it with your local community, then you already have the skills and drive to start selling.
It’s important to consider:
- Where you will cook.
- When you will cook.
- How you will store ingredients.
- What equipment you will need.
- Who you live with and whether they will be happy for you to cook.
If any issues arise, we are happy to offer any advice we can to overcome these. Many of our cooks encounter obstacles such as who they live with, busy schedules and space. These don’t have to stop you from cooking, as we can think creatively about how we can overcome these.
The next consideration is what food you will cook, and what your menu will look like. If you sell your food through Flavour Street, we are happy for you to cook any cuisine, including bakes. Our community loves authentic and unique flavours, so you could pick a cuisine you have extensive knowledge in, or choose a new fusion.
Once you’ve decided on a cuisine, think about what dishes are delicious, fun to make, and easy to make in larger batches. When you join our community, we will sample your food and help you to build your menu, but ultimately you’re in control, and you can try out new menus whenever you like.
To sell your food to the Flavour Street community you need:
Level 2 Hygiene Certificate
There are a variety of online providers for this, but one trustworthy source is Virtual College. You complete this self-guided course online at your own pace and do a test at the end to receive your certificate.
The course covers a range of topics, such as ‘the impact of food-borne illnesses, food safety hazards and contamination, food preservation, storage and temperature control, as well as HACCP’. This is all essential knowledge to run your business and will help you to become a better cook, and will help us to ensure our community is safe.
Register with your local council as a food business
This is essential and should be done before you begin selling. It’s completely free and is a very straightforward process. You can register on the government website here.
Once you’ve registered as a food business, your local council will give you a hygiene rating. This involves an inspection by a food safety officer, who will check:
- Food handling and storage.
- The physical condition of your kitchen – such as cleanliness and pest control.
- Food safety and hygiene.
You will receive a rating from 0 to 5, with 0 need urgent improvement and 5 being very good. We require a rating of 4 or 5.
We are aware that there is a backlog on hygiene ratings due to the pandemic. Please do not worry if you cannot get one yet.
Joining a platform
Earlier this year, we tested out our platform in pockets of South-East London. It’s fair to say London foodies loved it! Now we’re expanding across the UK, and we’re asking any cooks who may be interested to sign up.
Our cook onboarding process looks like this:
- A call with our founder, to make sure you have everything you have all the admin stuff sorted. We will then help you plan your menu.
- A food tasting, to make sure your food is ready for sale.
- Once we’re satisfied that you’re ready to sell through us, you can make an account on our site and list your food for sale. It’s free to join, so there’s no need to worry about set-up fees.
- Start selling to your community! You can start taking orders and cooking your food. We take secure payments through our site to make this process easier for you.
- We are here with you every step of the way, helping you with everything from photography to letting customers know you’re taking a holiday!
